The dedicated firefighters in our department respond to calls 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
The Medical calls to which we respond consist of patient care before the Medics arrive on scene. Whether it is taking blood pressure, administering oxygen or performing CPR and using an AED (Automated External Defibrillator). Most of our Emergency Medical responders purchase gloves and medical bags and supplies out of their own pockets. We also provide lift assistance for the Medics upon request from LifeNet. In addition to the medical assistance, we also set up Landing Zones for the medical helicopters in an extreme emergency
Calls involving vehicles range from very minor to extremely bad. Just as with medical calls, our firefighters provide patient care within our scope of practice until the medics arrive. We also assist with traffic control, to protect the people on scene as well as the public. Sometimes our first responders have to stabilize the vehicles and extricate the patients from the mangled vehicle, so our crew trains to keep sharp on procedures to remove patients safely. Firefighters provide assistance with cleanup of debris as well as fluid spills on the scene. Crews on scene are also equipped to handle the situation should the vehicle catch fire. A few of our calls a year consist of vehicles catching fire in various locations, whether it is a car in the yard or a boat in the water or on the trailer. Automobile and boat accidents are not the only transportation incidents that Piney has assisted with, we have also responded to plane crashes in our area.
Firefighters respond to all fire calls. Fire alarm calls that come to our department are investigated to ensure there is no threat to the structure. Grass Fires are handled with staff that is trained by the Arkansas Forestry Commission, we use a combination of water, rakes, shovels, and many other tools to extinguish the fire. When we respond to chimney fires firefighters extinguish the fires in a manner to prevent further damage to chimney. The Structure fire calls involve a lot of resources and manpower, we secure the scene, extinguish the fire, overhaul to ensure no rekindle using many tools such as a thermal imager, hooligan tool, pike poles, sheetrock puller, and axes.
